No trains to NAIT station during spring LRT maintenance; Central station to temporarily close. The city is planning spring and summer work on the LRT system that will include at least one temporary station closure, and cancelling train service to NAIT station. City spokesman Rowan Anderson said Monday that stopping Metro Line LRT service at the Kingsway station is a “byproduct” of some of the work being done on the Capital Line. He said the work on the Capital Line will reduce LRT frequency “a little bit,” and so to make up lost capacity while that project is happening, the city plans to run five-car trains system-wide. Trains on the Metro Line only have three cars because that’s all that will fit at NAIT station at present. The NAIT station is temporary, and a larger platform is expected to eventually be constructed in Blatchford. Anderson said the city settled on a plan to run longer trains, and that riders can take existing bus service from Kingsway to the Metro Line’s terminus at NAIT. “This work would happen after winter term exams are finished at NAIT,” Anderson said Monday, adding that the school has been advised of the change. Commuters were given notice that one of the planned LRT projects will include the closure of Central station between April 6 and April 27. Asked about the information cards handed out to riders early Monday, Anderson said ceiling tiles and lighting in the station’s platform are set to be replaced. Anderson said more details about various construction and maintenance work on the LRT system for the next four to six months will be revealed at a press conference Tuesday. |
