Travis Porteous is dead after he fatally shot a municipal councillor and seriously injured his former partner before turning the gun on himself, a source told CBC News.

Porteous, 33, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the shooting inside the councillor's mansion in the eastern Ontario community of Mississippi Mills, southwest of Ottawa, provincial police said.

Porteous later succumbed to his injuries.

Sarah Cameron, a 28-year-old mother of two whom Porteous had been involved with, also suffered life-threatening injuries but was in stable condition Friday morning, the Ottawa Hospital confirmed.

The exact nature of their relationship was unclear, but friends and colleagues told CBC News it was troubled.

Her father, 65-year-old Bernard Cameron, the councillor for Almonte Ward, died at the scene. He was well-known in the community, where he also taught high school for many years.

Sarah Cameron is a personal support worker at the Almonte Country Haven retirement home.

Co-workers are collecting donations for her young son and daughter, and an online fundraiser was launched on Thursday to help with Bernard Cameron's funeral costs, as well as Sarah Cameron's recovery.
