Police officer, 2nd man shot in Lac-Simon identified

WATCH ABOVE: Quebec provincial police have identified the police officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty in Lac-Simon on Saturday night. The Ministry of Public Safety has launched an independent investigation, and provincial police are also investigating. Mike Armstrong reports.

MONTREAL – Two people are dead following a shooting in the small community of Lac-Simon near Val d’Or,  500 km northwest of Montreal.

Two officers with the local police force were called to a residence in Lac-Simon at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a conflict.

When they arrived at the scene, at least one shot was fired in their direction, striking one of the responding officers.

He was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries. The fallen officer has been identified as 26-year-old Thierry Leroux.

Leroux had been a member of the St-Simon police force for six months.

Sgt. Claude Denis with the Sûreté du Québcec (SQ) told Global News that the officers did not fire back at the suspect.

His lifeless body was subsequently discovered inside the home. According to Sgt. Denis, the man died from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He has been identified as 22-year-old Joseph Anthony Raymond Papatie, a resident of Lac-Simon.

The investigation has been turned over Quebec provincial police.
