Police watchdog called in after stolen truck involved in fatal hit and run

 An officer with Tsuu T’ina police attempted to stop a suspicious truck that was speeding through the reserve southwest of Calgary at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. The truck failed to stop for the officer and left the reserve into Calgary, eventually heading south along the northbound lanes of 37 Street S.W. The truck, which had been stolen in Chestermere, smashed into a Toyota Corolla head-on, killing the car’s driver, a man in his 50s, just south of the intersection with 130 Avenue S.W.
“Three people, we believe, bailed out of the truck and ran away,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey, of the Calgary police traffic unit. A man and a woman were taken into custody nearby after they were tracked by the police canine unit. Officers deployed a police helicopter and the canine unit in an attempt to hunt down a third man, but he remains at large. The identity of the man killed in the crash will not be released, pending notification of his next-of-kin. Photographs of the scene revealed incredible carnage. The Toyota had come to rest with both passenger-side wheels perched on a concrete barrier, its front end crumpled by the impact of being smashing by the truck. The extent of damage was so great that first responders sawed off the car’s roof to look inside. “We’re investigating the fatality crash, and we’re going to be working with any other agency that winds up being involved in this,” Stacey said Thursday morning. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, an agency that investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death, including officer pursuits, has been called to probe the Evergreen crash. ASIRT says anyone who was in the area of 37 Street and 146 Avenue S.W. at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday should contact the agency.
