青年开被盗车狂奔撞警车

James Allemekinders said. Mounties say the ordeal began with a municipal officer trying to pull over a truck for speeding down a Sylvan Lake street shortly before 9:30 a.m. When the person behind the wheel kept going, the RCMP were called in. They say he used a field behind Fox Run School and then rammed a cop cruiser to evade them and later tore across another field behind another school — C.P. Blakely Elementary School — and through a fence. “School was in progress,” Allemekinders said “In each case the kids were all in class ... had there have been kids out there that would have changed everything.” Trying to drive the truck through a wooded area to avoid capture, the driver found his vehicle stuck, then found officers on him quickly — he stopped resisting. And it turns out the truck was reported stolen 10 km west of Sylvan Lake in Benalto three weeks ago. Dakota Cornelssen, 18, is charged with 19 criminal offences in connection, including assault with a weapon for ramming the cop cruiser, possession of stolen property over and under $5,000, flight from police, dangerous driving, drug-impaired driving, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and mischief over and under $5,000 among a variety of other, related charges. Allemekinders said this was Sylvan Lake RCMP’s first encounter with the young man, but not his first with police. “He has had some involvement with the police in Red Deer ... Red Deer RCMP know this fellow quite well, that’s would be safe to say,” he said. Allemekinders also said Friday’s incident marked the third in as many weeks where a police car’s been struck under very similar circumstances in the Sylvan Lake area. “In each of the three events I believe they were stolen vehicles,” he said. “They’re doing driving these vehicles with no regard for their safety, or for anybody else’s safety. “I would say drugs do play a big role in these types of events, and the motivations of the person behind the wheel.” damien.wood@sunmedia.ca On Twitter: @SUNDamienWood
