Fire broke out in a southeast Calgary fourplex on Saturday morning.

Battalion chief Stu Laird said there was extensive damage to the unit that caught fire and smoke damage to the other suites.

He said at least 12 people live in the building and they'll be without a home for the time being. He also said there's "one cat that is unaccounted for."

Stevon Poucette was in the building at the time of the fire. He said he heard what sounded like a scuffle and woke to smoke filling the fourplex.

"That's when I got up and checked and the floor was already hot," he said. "As soon as I stepped on it, it was already hot."

Chris Alexson, who escaped with only the clothes on his back, said it all happened so fast.

"Fire started. All of a sudden it was just there. There was almost no time to get out of the house," he said.

"We don't know what's going to happen now. We're just going to wait around here for a little while, see if we can get back in the house."

No one was injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
