CALGARY – Large trees were being cut down in front of city hall Sunday morning. Ward 7 Councillor Druh Farrell tweeted about the trees, explaining that the trees were responsible for damaging the sandstone on the historic city hall building.According to Farrell, the spruce trees were shading the sandstone and preventing it from drying out.Farrell tweeted that the trees were too close to the building and it will cost more than $20 million to repair the sandstone.@AnoukKendall @TracyNagai @gccarra @GlobalCalgary Shouldn't have been planted close to the building. 20+ million to fix the sandstone.— Druh Farrell (@DruhFarrell) April 10, 2016

The conversation on Twitter continued when Ward 9 Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra posted that the trees were a problem for the building because they de-water the sandstone and were in the way..@TracyNagai @AnoukKendall @GlobalCalgary @tempest9 doing a $30million redux of this #yycheritage treasure; trees in way & dewater sandstone— Gian-Carlo Carra (@gccarra) April 10, 2016
