Six years after Laura Furlan was strangled by Christopher Dunlop in his truck, her family expressed their grief and sense of loss to a Calgary judge.

At Dunlop's sentencing hearing today, Furlan was remembered as a loving mother whose death has caused her family years of anguish.

In his victim impact statement, Furlan's son — 21-year-old Louis Lowry — spoke about learning of her death when he was in Grade 10.

"For two years, I lost the will to succeed," said Lowry. "I was robbed of the opportunity to have an adult relationship with my mother; I'll never get to have a glass of wine with her."

Christopher Dunlop pleaded guilty to manslaughter and indignity to a body last month.

Online search history investigated

The prosecution is seeking a 14-16 year sentence, while Dunlop's lawyer proposed 12 years.

Dunlop admitted to picking Furlan up on Aug. 25, 2009, with the agreement he would pay her $100 in exchange for sex.

The 38-year-old had struggled with addictions but was overcoming those with "courage and a will to survive," according to her mother.

Missing for two weeks, Furlan's body was eventually found in Fish Creek Park.

After a lengthy undercover investigation, Dunlop confessed to strangling Furlan while he was having sex with her in his truck. He was arrested three years after her death.

A forensic analysis of Dunlop's online history from the day she died found searches for "fingerprints on a dead body," "rates of decomposition," "methods for disposing a body using fire" and "DNA test for semen."

'She was thrown away like trash'

Furlan's mother said the family was in a panic for weeks while she was missing.

"When her body was found, it was too much to bear for our family," said Kathryn Furlan. "She was thrown away like trash."

Her death was described as senseless, cruel and brutal.

"She was the love of my life and I mourn her death every day," said her mother.

'There's been so much loss'

At the end of today's hearing, Dunlop offered a tearful apology to Furlan's family.

"I am terribly sorry to everyone who has had to bear the consequences of my actions," said Dunlop. "There's been so much loss."

A decision on sentencing will be read on Dec. 4 by Justice Kristine Eidsvick, who addressed both the Furlan and Dunlop families before she left the courtroom.

"There's a lot of injured souls in the courtroom today."
