'Always happy': Contractor remembers police shooting victim Vitaly Savin

The man shot and killed by police during a traffic stop last week is being remembered as a "stand-up person."

Vitaly Savin died after a confrontation with city police in a southwest Edmonton neighbourhood on March 9.

The 55-year-old Edmonton resident worked as a siding installer and spent much of the past eight years as a subcontractor for construction company Great Canadian.

Jarred Beyer, general manager of exteriors at Great Canadian, worked closely with Savin and saw him every few days.

"He's the most polite person that I’ve dealt with," Beyer said. "Always happy, always willing to go the extra mile for the company.

“When I found out what happened to him it just didn’t make sense to me.”

An officer responding to reports of an impaired driver pulled Savin over on a cul-de-sac in the Hodgson neighbourhood. Both the officer and Savin stepped out of their vehicles.

The officer told a witness at the scene Savin had a hunting knife and that he shot Savin after slipping and falling on ice while backing away from him.

“I’ve never seen him mad," Beyer said of Savin. "He was a really nice person.”

Savin is originally from Russia and liked to travel, Beyers said. Savin has a wife in Edmonton and two adult children living in Russia.

A funeral and wake for Savin is planned for Saturday.

A GoFundMe page raised more than $10,000 for Savin's family as of Wednesday afternoon.
