Man shot by police responding to gun call armed with .303 rifle, say investigators Glenn Justin Ironchild. (Facebook) Alberta's police watchdog says the man shot by an Edmonton city police officer responding to a gun call at a busy northside intersection was armed with a Lee-Enfield .303 calibre rifle. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said in a Thursday statement that the man -- identified by family as 36-year-old Glenn Justin (Occo) Ironchild -- shot by the officer at 137 Avenue and 50 Street after multiple 911 calls around 11:33 a.m. Monday was in possession of a Lee-Enfield .303 calibre firearm recovered from the scene. Court documents show Ironchild has a lifetime firearm prohibition and had a warrant for his arrest at the time of the shooting. ASIRT added that Ironchild remains in hospital in stable condition. While city police investigate Ironchild's actions, ASIRT stressed that its investigation will focus on the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the involved officers and the use of force during the gun call. "While there is considerable information already within the public domain, it is important to recognize there is a full, fair, and objective investigative process that must occur in every case; the integrity of which must be protected. It is important not to rush to a conclusion before all the evidence has been collected and assessed," continues the ASIRT statement. "With technological advantages, citizens are more often in a position to provide valuable evidence in incidents such as these. ASIRT would like to thank all those who have come forward and assisted with the investigation by providing recorded video, photographs, and statements in relation to the incident." The officer who shot Ironchild, a 10-year member of the force, was on patrol with a new recruit who didn't fire his weapon. |
