ALERT makes arrests at west Edmonton home

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams' organized crime and gang unit seized more than $200,000 worth of drugs from a west Edmonton home, including 2-1/2 kg of cannabis resin packaged to look like it was medical grade, police said Wednesday.

After a two-day investigation, ALERT members searched a home in Edmonton's Canora neighbourhood April 4. Two people were arrested.

Investigators seized eight kilograms of dried marijuana and 2-1/2 kg of cannabis resin, known more commonly as shatter.

Cannabis resin is derived from marijuana, but is far more potent. While the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content — the chemical component in marijuana that makes users feel high — in regular marijuana is usually between eight and 15 per cent, the THC content in cannabis resin can reach up to 90 per cent.

Drug dealers manufacture shatter using flammable gases such as butane, making it a significant fire risk, according to police.

The cannabis resin seized was individually packaged in one-gram packages to make it look like the drugs were a medical-quality product.

Banu Layik, 39, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Wyatt Cherneske, 22, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.
