Police say man lied about carjacking to cover up hit and run

City police allege a man lied about being the victim of a carjacking to cover up his involvement in a hit and run collision Monday in northeast Calgary. Police were called around 7 p.m. to the 5100 block of Whitestone Way N.E. after a man reported his vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint about half an hour earlier. The individual told police he was getting into his relative’s 2006 Pontiac Wave when a man came out of the dark, pulled out a handgun, and ordered him to drive to 32nd Avenue toward 36th Street N.E. The man said he received his facial injuries after the culprit hit him and banged his head on the steering wheel, police added. He claimed he was eventually ordered out of the car, and ran home to call 911. About five to 10 minutes after the reported carjacking, police were alerted to a hit and run collision involving the Pontiac Wave, a Mazda 5, and a parked and unoccupied Honda Accord in the 3400 block of 38th Street N.E. The driver of the Mazda was not injured. Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the Pontiac flee the scene on foot and gave a description that matched the man who made the carjacking complaint. Police believe the so-called carjacking victim actually received his injuries when the airbag deployed in the hit and run. After officers took his statement, police responded to the scene of the hit and run, where they realized he may have been responsible for the crash. When they returned to the man’s home to speak with him further, he was gone. He faces charges associated with making a false statement to police and with fleeing the scene of the crash.
