Alberta Liberals put off leadership race for one year

Ryan Jackson / Edmonton JournalThe party’s board of directors voted Saturday to hold its leadership convention in spring 2017 rather than this April, as originally planned. “A spring 2017 leadership convention will give candidates time to organize as well as time to gain full party support before the next provincial election,” said Dr. David Swann in a news release. The board voted unanimously to have Swann remain as the party’s interim leader. “I am honoured by the continued support of this great group of Albertans,” Swann said in the statement. “The endorsement of me is also an endorsement of all the hard work Alberta Liberals are doing provincewide.” The party has been without an official leader since Dr. Raj Sherman quit the post in May 2015. The Liberals were nearly wiped out in the spring election that saw Premier Rachel Notley’s NDP sweep to power, leaving only Swann to hold his party’s banner in the legislature. Long-serving MLA Laurie Blakeman lost her Edmonton-Centre riding to the NDP. Two of Swann’s former legislature colleagues, Kent Hehr and Darshan Kang, quit provincial politics in 2014 to run for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.
