It’s getting harder for Albertans to save for their retirement.
The latest ATB Investor Beat, released on Monday, said 48 per cent of those surveyed said they are behind on their retirement savings goals. The previous survey in July said 40 per cent were struggling in this area.
The two most common reasons for the setback are the cost of living and unexpected expenses.
“It’s clear Albertans are feeling the pinch right now,” said Chris Turchansky, president of ATB Investor Services, in a statement.
The ATB Investor Beat survey was conducted in October and included 1,024 respondents.
The survey also found:
• Two-thirds of Albertans said the drop in oil prices has had a strong impact on the province’s economy.
• 45 per cent said they have been personally affected by the downturn.
• 41 per cent said they’ve had their salary either frozen or reduced.
• 19 per cent said they’ve lost their jobs.
• 61 per cent said they have reduced their spending.
• 23 per cent have stopped some of their regular savings and investment contributions.
• 14 per cent withdrew some of their long-term savings and investments.
Also, 84 per cent of Albertans said they don’t expect the saving/investing outlook to change over the next three to six months.
