Crown upgrades charge to manslaughter in 19-year-old's death

Tanya Campbell-Losier loved nothing more than to throw on a pair of cowboy boots and spend the day in a corral training and riding horses. The beasts had bucked her off many times, her mother says, but she was fearless and thought nothing of getting back on. “Even if she wasn’t going out there to ride or train, if she was feeling sad, she’d just go out there and sit with them,” said Lorraine Campbell-Losier, Tanya’s mom. “She’s my beautiful baby and always will be.” Tanya, 19, was found in a Brooks home with severe injuries last week and was rushed to a Calgary hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Jessie Dyck, Tanya’s 26-year-old boyfriend, was originally charged with aggravated assault, but the Crown upgraded the charge to manslaughter in a Medicine Hat court on Monday. Dyck has been held in custody and will make his next court appearance on March 1. “A lot of people loved Tanya so much. We are all banding together, holding each other tight,” Lorraine said. “Our main message here is love, not hate, not anger. I want everyone to feel love and remember the best of Tanya because she was funny; she was a firecracker, that one.” Tanya’s greatest passion was training horses, something she wanted to pursue professionally. She loved the outdoors. Lorraine said she and Tanya weren’t just mother-and-daughter. They were sisters; they were confidants. “We told each other everything,” the mom said. The death of her daughter brought her low, making her feel “like my guts were being ripped out.” Lorraine knew her “baby” would never text her again and write, “Hi, mommy; I love you.” But she’s trying to remain hopeful. Lorraine said she has been overwhelmed by an outpouring of support she has received by text, email and Facebook in the days since her daughter died. A Go Fund Me account had raised nearly $16,000 for funeral costs by early Thursday evening, while a memorial event in Brooks aims to raise even more over the weekend. The show and shine car show, barbecue and bake sale will be held Sunday afternoon. “I can sit around here and say, ‘I hate him,’ but that’s not going to heal me,” Lorraine said. “That’s not going to make meal feel better.
