Plea deal reached in fatal shooting: 'It's not going to bring Natasha back'

Natasha Mohamed Farah, 26, was killed around 3 a.m. Saturday outside the Bronco Smokehouse Saloon nightclub on 11th Avenue and 1st Street S.W. The man charged with fatally shooting a Calgary woman outside a nightclub has reached a plea bargain to admit to a reduced charge of manslaughter. But the mother of Natasha Farah said Friday that regardless of what happens in court, the fate of Hussein Ibrahim will ultimately be in the hands of God. “I know in my heart it’s going to hurt him for the rest of his life,” Naima Ismail said, of the fact Ibrahim will have to live with what he did to her daughter. “That’s enough punishment from God,” she said, by phone from Ontario. Defence lawyer Allan Fay appeared in Court of Queen’s Bench to cancel a three-week trial set to begin Oct. 31, and schedule a disposition date of April 29. Fay said outside court that a plea to a reduced charge was agreed upon after discussions with Crown prosecutor Adam May. Ibrahim, 22, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Aug. 23, 2014, death of Farah, 26, who was gunned down from a passing car. Farah was standing outside Bronco Smokehouse and Saloon in the 100 block of 11 Ave. S.W. about 3 a.m., when shots were fired from the vehicle.

Lorraine Hjalte / Calgary Herald “As a result of discussions between myself and the Crown prosecutor and a re-examination of the file we have agreed that he will plead guilty to a lesser offence,” he said. “The Crown ultimately agreed with me that their was no evidence my client intended to shoot anyone,” Fay said. “This was, for lack of a better term, a very unfortunate accident.” While he and prosecutor Adam May have agreed to a joint proposal for sentencing, he would not discuss what that would be. “These matters always attract a high sentence. It will be a high period of incarceration, there’s no doubt about that (but) I’m not at liberty to discuss what myself and the Crown have discussed,” he said. The lawyer said Ibrahim has been interested in concluding the case. “He’s been wanting to have this matter resolved for a long time he has urged me on a number of occasions to talk to the Crown,” Fay said. “Fortunately we were able to get there.” For Ismail, no resolution will give her what she really wants. “It’s not going to bring Natasha back … it’s not like my daughter’s going to come back,” she said.
