Homicide detectives probe death in north Edmonton parking lot

 A man was lying dead in a north Edmonton strip-mall parking lot when a passerby found him and called police at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said the citizen came across the deceased person and another man with signs of trauma near 125 Street and 132 Avenue. The surviving man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. If the death is confirmed as a homicide, it'll be the city's 26th of the year and the fifth in 11 days. Halfway through 2017, Edmonton's homicide total has climbed to 25 — the same number of homicides the city had experienced at the midway point of 2011, which was a record-breaking year for homicides. But speaking at a news conference held last week after the city's fourth homicide in nine days, Edmonton Police Service Deputy Chief Brian Simpson said that although the number of deaths so far this year is "high," it is nothing the city hasn't seen before. Citing a study of Edmonton homicide data from 2007 to 2012 by MacEwan University professor Sandy Jung, Simpson said three factors Jung found present in many of the homicides over the research period hold true with what's happening in 2017 — most victims were known to the suspects, substance abuse is a common factor, and most of the alleged offenders have a criminal history. "As we've commented in the past, this research demonstrates that not everyone faces the same level of risk as it relates to being a victim or a perpetrator of a violent crime or homicide," Simpson said. A map of Edmonton shows that violent, fatal crime hasn't plagued any one neighbourhood or area. The locations of homicides have ranged from inside homes to parking lot shootings to a playground. Police said guns were used in nine of the homicides and knives were the weapon used in nine other cases.
